« Energy transition : are we ready for this and will the lights stay on ? »
Energy challenges need to be framed in a worldwide perspective. In particular, the growing population and the increasing energy consumption per inhabitant are relevant in this respect. The combination of these effects will lead to increasing energy needs and put up further the emission of greenhouse gasses. So, in spite of the important growth of renewable energy and important investments, the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere will probably continue to increase.
Focusing on Europe / Belgium, one observes that the triple energy challenge (security of supply / environmental performance / affordability) is well understood and recognized. However, implementing these priorities on the political level has largely failed. Especially, security of electricity supply and affordability have come under considerable strain, while at the same time we have missed to implement the most effective environmental investments.
A coherent, stable and well-designed energy policy should be a priority. And this question needs to be approached on the basis of technology, science and economy, rather than on emotions, feelings and ideologies...
The particular challenge for our highly energy intensive country makes it an even bigger and more risky task.
Luc Sterckx holds an MSc and a PhD in Chemical Engineering, as well as a post-graduate in Business Administration and several other training certificates. He is equally a certified International Director from INSEAD.
He started his career at Exxon, then became the CEO of the start-up Indaver, before joining for a decade the executive committee of PetroFina (now Total). As CEO, he subsequently completed the MBO of Oleon, and held afterwards the position of CEO of Luminus, He is actually an active Board member/president and company consultant in well over a dozen of companies. He is a part-time Professor at the KU Leuven and an expert on internal governance.
He is the President of the Board of FEBELIEC (the federation of high energy consumers in Belgium) and of the Advisory Board of EnergyVille (Flanders association of university energy research) as well.
