« Hydrogen as vehicle of energy for public transport »


Founded in 1885, UITP (Union Internationale des Transports Publics / International Association of Public Transport) represents some 1,400 enterprises from 96 countries of the world.

In the framework of an approach to decarbonisation and pollution control of transport, developing electric buses that can run both easily and efficiently constitutes a major challenge in a world where more than 50% of population live in urban area, with a growth rate of about 2%. This is why UITP has initialized different studies that aim at extending fully-electric solution to the core part of the urban bus network.

Umberto Guida will explain why, among different sources of energy for public transport by buses, electric propulsion with hydrogen as a vehicle of energy has been selected by UITP as the best solution as regards with its economic, environmental and societal feasibility. He will also describe the measures that can be taken to facilitate the market uptake of electric buses in Europe.

Umberto Guida is presently Director of Research & Innovation at UITP, an organisation he joined in 2008 and where he has coordinated projects such as EBSF (European Bus System of the Future) and ZeEUS (Zero Emission Urban bus Systems).

He holds an MSc in System Engineering from the University ‘Federico II’ of Naples and has more than 15 years experience in the management of projects funded by various national and international entities and related to different means of transport and to satellite navigation.
