Over the last 150 years, the global steel sector has grown from nearly zero to 2 billion tons. This growth is the result of two elements: the nearly continuous search for energy and efficiency gains leading to a material which has beaten the inflation over the last 100 years, and the versatility of the material to be used in nearly all products.
Although steel is itself one of the most sustainable man-made materials, the CO2 footprint of the sector is summing up to 8 %, mainly due to its scale. Today the sector is at the start of a new era: the transition to Carbon Neutral Steelmaking.
The lecture will give an overview of the challenges and opportunities to transform the steel sector to carbon neutrality. The main technological steps will be described and the constraints for implementation in a carbon neutral world identified.
Starting from the traditional and conflicting narratives for carbon neutral steelmaking, which are the CCS (carbon capture and storage) narrative and the hydrogen narrative, it is shown that steelmakers need to develop the new compelling Smart Carbon Narrative based on a flexible combination of carbon and hydrogen inputs from renewables and from waste resources at the entry and production of high valuable chemicals with CCU (carbon capture and use), CCE (carbon capture and export) and BECCS (bio-energy CCS).
The Smart Carbon narrative will bring the steel sector at the centre of the Carbon Neutral Eco system with a more “Just Transition” which creates jobs and prosperity for our society.
Carl De Maré graduated in 1985 at the University of Gent, Belgium as Master of Science in Electromechanical Engineering. He started his professional career in 1986 as researcher at that same University, where he was responsible for development of new electrical steels.
In 1988 he joined the steel company Sidmar, later ArcelorMittal Gent, where, over a period of 18 years, he took several positions: (1) steel application engineer of the research centre OCAS, where he developed the SIBETEX steel sheet roughness by use of electron beam texturing of rolls; (2) responsible of the quality & process yield improvement programme in the cold rolling and galvanizing area; (3) general manager of the steel plant, where he realized a 250 million Euro investment programme to increase the capacity from 4 to 5,2 million ton.
In 2006, with the merger of Arcelor and Mittal steelworks, he changed position to the corporate level where he became Vice-President of ArcelorMittal Group and took the position of CTO of ArcelorMittal Flat Europe and member of the Group Investment Allocation Committee.
In 2014, he was nominated Vice-President Technology Strategy for the ArcelorMittal Group. In this role he developed the roadmap for Carbon Neutral steelmaking and has set up multiple partnerships related to demonstrate and integrate new technologies for low CO2 impact steelmaking, as the STEELANOL project to convert steel waste gas into ethanol in partnership with Lanzatech, and as the H2H project to develop a hydrogen-based DRI pilot in partnership with Midrex.
From 2017 to 2021, he was chairman of the European Steelmaking Technology Platform (ESTEP). In this period, the Clean Steel partnership with the European Commission was set up to support the implementation of innovative carbon neutral steelmaking technologies.
In 2021 he left ArcelorMittal and started his own business as senior expert to consult Energy Intensive Industries as steel, chemicals and cement on their journey to Carbon Neutrality.
