« Fake news or not : who should decide ? Responsibility and consequences »

CONFÉRENCE EN FRANÇAIS ET EN ANGLAIS

Avec/With :
• SHÉHÉRAZADE SEMSAR-DE BOISSÉSON, Managing Director of Politico’s European operation
• FRANÇOIS le HODEY, CEO IPM Group
• MICHAEL BARTHOLOMEW, President of Bartholomew Advisors SCS

While fake news have always existed, today it has become a major issue because of the ease for anyone to post and share information online, the speed such news may spread on the net and the global reach they might quickly attain.

Within a minute, millions of people can read about something that is not true, that distorts their understanding of reality. Misinformation becomes a weapon as we have seen with Russia about Ukraine or with elections in the US. On the other hand, it can be a unique tool for people to defend fundamental rights, freedom of expression and to denounce abusive situation in context of political repression.

Outstanding speakers will address the problems arising with the spread of fake information through traditional and social media :

- SHÉHÉRAZADE SEMSAR-DE BOISSÉSON, Managing Director of Politico’s European operation, a pure digital media player.

- MICHAEL BARTHOLOMEW, journalist and public affairs expert, specialised in internet and media issues, will moderate this rich conversation.

Debating on the social and political impact asks for a comprehensive approach of the role and responsibilities of social media but also of its users. It addresses fundamental principles like freedom of expression, media pluralism, the citizens right for access to a diverse and reliable information.

Today Europe, but also countries like Germany or France, are considering policy initiatives to counter disinformation spread online. Would law-making against fake news be the solution and reinforce democracy, or would it rather threaten it ? Should not the push come from companies themselves ?
