Stephen Fidler, Former U.K. and Brexit Editor of The Wall Street Journal

« Brexit : Buyers' remorse ? »
It’s been already more than seven years since the Brexit referendum of June 23, 2016 resulted in the decision from the United Kingdom to withdraw from the European Union. The actual withdrawal then took place on January 31, 2020, after a lengthy political process in the UK and negotiation with the EU.
On that evening, the UK left the EU after 47 years of membership in the European Economic Community and then in the European Union. Just a few days after that actual withdrawal, the UK, the EU and the rest of the World were struck by the Covid-19 global pandemic crisis and worldwide lockdown.
Just two years and three weeks after that withdrawal, Europe and the World were stunned by another international crisis : the unprovoked and wide scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation.
Since then, all these factors have had major impacts on security, on our economies and on our daily lives, for instance with the resurgence and spikes of inflation. This raises many questions :
- What about these events’ impacts in the UK ?
- With a succession of five distinct Tory Prime Ministers heading the United Kingdom, did the UK lose its political stability ?
- Do the UK consumers have actual remorse about Brexit ?
In order to get a clearer picture on these issues, we decided to invite (once again) Mister Stephen Fidler, the former U.K. and Brexit Editor of The Wall Street Journal.
Stephen Fidler first spoke at Château Sainte-Anne on May 23, 2016 just a month before the referendum and then in March 21, 2019 in the midst of the complex negotiation process.
He will analyse the perceptions and actualities of Brexit and try tentatively to suggest how this will bear on UK-EU relations in the future.

Stephen Fidler is a former international correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times and Reuters. He has been a serial specialist on issues including international financial markets and the global financial system, business and economics, Latin America, foreign, security and defence affairs and the EU.
