« Geopolitics and traditions. The case of Ukraine and Taiwan »
Fernando Gentilini is an Italian diplomat with more than twenty years' experience in crisis management, peace negotiations, multilateral and European affairs.
After a short overview on the latest developments around Ukraine and Taiwan, focus will be on comparing the two situations, not only from a geopolitical point of view but having in mind the Russian and Chinese civilisations.
The speaker will address the issue in Ukraine and Taiwan based not only on political and geopolitical considerations, but also on cultural and historical ones.

• 1986: graduated in Law from the University of Rome
• 1990: joined the Italian Diplomatic Service in Rome
• 1992-1996: Second Secretary at the Italian Embassy in Addis Ababa
• 1996-1999: First Secretary of the Italian Permanent Representation to the E.U. in Brussels
• 1999: seconded to the Policy Unity of the Secretary General/High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) in Brussels and deployed in several Balkans hot spots
• 2003: Head of Unit for the Western Balkans Department in the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
• 2004: Personal Representative of the High Representative for CFSP in Kosovo
• 2006: Deputy Diplomatic Advisor to the Italian Prime Minister in Rome
• 2008: NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan
• 2011: European Union Special Representative in Kosovo
• 2012: Director for Western Europe, Western Balkans and Turkey for the European External Action Service (EEAS)
• 2015: European Union Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process
• 2018: EEAS Managing Director for the Middle East and North Africa in Brussels
